Food Should Taste Good: Review & Giveaway!

UPDATE: This giveaway is now closed!

****

I’m a firm believer that there are certain things everyone likes. And when you meet someone that insists they don’t like it, they’re a liar or crazy; or maybe both. One of those things is chips. So when Food Should Taste Good contacted me and asked if I’d be interested in trying some of their chips to review and subsequently give away, I couldn’t resist. I mean, if I did, wouldn’t that just make me a crazy liar? I’ll do whatever it takes to stick to my guns! [Scroll to the bottom for giveaway details!]

I was chipped!
I was chipped!

The box of chips arrived on a Friday afternoon – the perfect opportunity for ultimate chip snacking. The box was labeled with a “fragile” sticker, which I thought was clever… no one likes broken chips! I immediately ripped open the box and was thrilled with what I found: four bags of chips including sweet potato, barbecue,  and classic salt and pepper. They’re all certified gluten-free and Kosher, and you can see all their varieties here. But the bag that caught my eye? The chocolate ones. Yes, you read that correctly – chocolate tortilla chips! As soon as  I saw them I knew what was to become of those chips… dessert nachos! I always snack on savory things like nachos and popcorn and think to myself “it would be really fun to experiment with a sweet version…” yet I never get around to making them. Thanks to FSTG, that all changed.

With a name like Food Should Taste Good, it’s no surprise that I’m about to tell you the chips taste good. In fact, they’re awesome; and I know I’m not alone in thinking so. I started with the sweet potato chips and had them alongside a wrap with dinner. They were super thick and crunchy (something I love in a chip), and also had a distinct sweet potato flavor without just tasting like a dried sweet potato or just a tortilla chip. And even though I’m not a health food nut, it was nice to know I could enjoy a hefty amount (serving size is 18 chips) without feeling guilty! I sampled all of the flavors that were sent, but saved the chocolate for my special concoction. These dessert nachos are SO easy to make and really fun. And depending on what you have on hand, you can really use whatever ingredients you have. I have every intention of making them again in the future, and even changing it up a bit!

May Foodie Pen Pals!

This month I was paired up with fellow FitFluential Abassador, Annica for Foodie Pen Pals. I know I say it every month, but coming home to these goodies at my doorstep is such a treat. I order a lot of stuff online (oops), but this is always my favorite package! If you haven’t joined yet and are thinking about it – do it! There are details of how to join below.

I received my package just after finding out my gastroenterologist wanted me to temporarily cut out dairy. Naturally, I cursed myself for mentioning how much I love chocolate, because of course Annica included a delicious looking chocolate bar! Thankfully, I was able to enjoy everything else in the package, and had all the crackers as my go-to snacks over the past two weeks, as the only crackers we had in the house were Cheese It’s. I was so excited about the rice crackers, I wound up devouring the entire bag before snapping a picture! They were an interesting twist on a typical chip, and reminded me a lot of a tortilla chip since it was on the grainy side.

There were also some tomato & basil crackers which were so flavorful – they were a lot like a pita chip (with that fluffy crunch, if that makes any sense), rasberry chipotle salsa, and blueberry granola. I’ve never had jarred fruit salsa, but this one is good! I love chipotle, so I knew it was right up my alley. It’s a great smoky/sweet combo, and most of the jar is already gone. I’m also a huge fan of the blueberry granola – it tastes like a blueberry muffin, and has been so delicious with some vanilla almond milk!

SO delicious

While I haven’t been able to try the mint chocolate bar, FiberOne bar (one of my favorites!), or the tortellini, I’m anxiously awaiting the go-ahead from my doctor to have dairy again. When I get the OK, you better believe I’ll be sampling each of these goodies! I’ve also been saving the Gevalia coffee because I know how yummy it is, but I think I’ll be giving in soon.

Everything was so delicious, and Annica did a great job picking out some really fun treats for me to try – I love getting to sample new things!

I had the privilege of sending some goodies to Heather, and since she doesn’t have a blog, I offered for her to do a review here!

This month I decided to try something new, Ive really been trying to eat healthier and make better choices and try new things. I ran accross this awesome blog http://www.theleangreenbean.com and on this blog found something called FOODIE PEN PALS turns out it’s this amazing program to exchange food with others – If you haven’t heard of it you definitely need to check it out! It’s a great way to meet new poeple and find new blogs to follow with amazing recipes and ideas!

Now onto the FUN part……my box i received……I never thought i would be so excited to get something in the mail. I patiently waited for my box of goodies and when it arrived it was even better than i imagined! This month i received goodies from Danielle with Foodosaurus Rex turns out after reading her blog we have a couple things in common – Running and Cupcakes – 2 of my favorite things!! My box was filled the perfect assortment of goodies to satisfy my sweet tooth! Unfortunately i didn’t take any pics as im new to this and it didn’t cross my mind. 😦

First i found a bag of Trade Joe’s Peanut Butter Chocolate Covered Pretzel Bites, we are in the process of remodeling our house so i thought i would put these away for a day when i needed a little snack in the middle of painting. Well turns out that day wasn’t too far down the road and i made the mistake of opening the bag while my family was over helping us work on the house. The bag was gone in no time, they were AMAZING!!! These were a huge hit with help and like Danielle said “dangerously addictive” possibly it’s a good thing I dont live near a Trader Joe’s! 🙂 Well after that chocolate kick we decided to go ahead and try the chocolate and almond bar – AGAIN AMAZING!!! I was glad there were lots of other people there to help me eat it otherwise I’m sure i would have had no problem devouring it all to myself!!!

Next was Perky Jerky my husband and I tried this on one of our many late nights of painting and was without a doubt the freshest, tastiest jerky i have ever had! YUMMO –

Also included in my box was a fiber one bar – I took this with me to eat after one of my 5k races – loved it, I have since bought a box and keep them on hand at the house. I also found a bag of Trader Joe’s Nut and Berry mix it included Almonds, Cranberries, Raisins, Cashews, Blueberries, Walnuts and Raspberries. I would never have thought of snagging this up on my own but beings that i got it i thought what the heck and tried it and sure enough LOVED it. This bag went with me to work for my mid-day snacks on several days! On one day i picked a few of the dried fruit out and put them on top my chocolate rice cake covered with pb2 mix – FABULOUS!!!! Could not believe how good this mix was loved it all!

And to top it off i also received some altoids, a little fresh breath after all my yummy goodies!!
Thank you Danielle for the AWESOME box of goodies can’t wait til i receive my next box next month!

Chips for dinner

There are times when it’s okay to throw the rules out the window. Allowing yourself to let go of the idea that chips are not a suitable dinner is a prime example of that type of time. This is now the second time I’ve used chips in a dish aside from regular nachos, and the result has been pretty delicious.

While sifting through the pile of cookbooks I received for Christmas trying to meal plan, I remembered a tiny book I hadn’t yet given much attention – Eat Tweet, by @cookbook (aka Maureen Evans). The title alone is accurate for my own life… I eat and tweet (among other, less important things). I’m not going to lie that it’s a little difficult here and there to decipher the abbreviated language within some of the reicpes. But, the recipes are all pretty straight forward considering they’re 140 characters or less. I like the idea of a dish that can fit into a tweet.

This is by no means healthy, and I don’t even know how I got away with serving it as “dinner.” It’s definitely moreso a party snack to be eaten sparingly. However, my fiancé and I totally ate this for dinner, alongside a giant salad. And let me tell you, it was delicious. I’m thinking I should start cooking with chips more often…

I went ahead and decoded the recipe for you, to make it easeir to read… I figured a 140 character abbreviated recipe has it’s place on Twitter, but not neccessarily my blog. I can’t wait to decode more of these.

Frito Pie
via Eat Tweet
Serves 4

Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups of chili, any variety  you like (I used Amy’s black bean)
1 cup chopped yellow onion
3 cups Fritos (I used the lightly salted version, as I find their regular is super salty)
2 cups of shredded cheese
*shredded lettuce, sour cream, and salsa for garnish

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
2. In greased pie dish, layer 2 cups of Fritos, followed by 1/2 cup diced onion, 1 cup of cheese, and the 2 1/2 cups of chili.
3. Layer remaining cup of fritos, followed by remaining onions and cheese.
4. Bake for 15 minutes until chips and cheese are golden brown.

TERRA Blues Giveaway!

I love chips. I mean, how could I not? Potato, corn, tortilla, vegetable… you name it, I’ll eat it in chip form. Except for banana chips, because I despise bananas. So, when I was offered a bag of TERRA Blues Chips to review and then giveaway on the blog, I was all ears!

TERRA Blues chips are made from the blue potato, which has a nutty flavor and a blueish-purple hue. It also has 40% less fat than the leading potato chip (6 grams versus 10 of fat), and they’re pretty darn good! Like most chips, I start eating them, and the next thing I know I look down and the bag is almost empty. Oops…

If you’ve ever flown on JetBlue you’ve likely had them (they’re the official snack of the airline). They’re actually hosting a contest of their own at TERRAchips.com, where you can enter to win a four day/ three vacation at Beaches Turks & Caicos Resort Villages & Spa for two adults and two children – you better believe I’m going to enter!

Monday (March 14th), is not only Pi Day, but also National Potato Chip Day! So, in honor of that I am giving away a bag of TERRA Blues chips and a coupon for another free bag of TERRA chips, so you can try another one of their yummy options (may I recommend their sweet potato chips – a personal favorite of mine)! You have between now and Sunday 3/13 at 9pm EST to enter, and I’ll pick a winner and announce it on National Potato Chip Day!

Here’s how to enter:
1. Leave a comment telling me about your favorite chip
2. Follow me on Twitter
3. Re-tweet the giveway: @FoodosaurusRex is giving away TERRA Blue chips in honor of National Potato Chip Day!

… If you do more than one of the above, make sure to come back and leave a comment for each!
